The PMP® certification is a professional experience-based certification. Experience leading and directing projects is critical to a PMP® candidate’s success. Training alone is not sufficient to pass the exam.
The authorized training materials were developed by experts familiar with the exam content outline, but these individuals did NOT participate in developing the PMP® exam.

Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, you need both education and project management experience. There are three possible paths:
- High school diploma: 60 months of project leadership experience within the past 8 years and 35 hours of project management training (or CAPM or equivalent).
- Bachelor’s degree: 36 months of project leadership experience within the past 8 years and 35 hours of project management training.
- Bachelor’s degree from a GAC accredited program: 24 months of project leadership experience within the past 8 years, plus GAC coursework that may fulfill training requirements.
The Exam
- 180 questions total.
- 230 minutes to complete.
- Content areas: People (42%), Process (50%), Business Environment (8%).
- Offered in multiple languages.
- Includes scored and unscored pretest questions.
Application and Process
- Confirm you meet eligibility.
- Submit your application with details of your project experience and training.
- Pay fees and schedule the exam, either at a test center or online.
- Prepare using courses, sample exams, and the PMBOK Guide.
- Take the exam.
Maintenance and Renewal
To keep the PMP certification active, you must earn 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs) every 3 years. PDUs can be gained through learning, teaching, presenting, volunteering, or creating professional content.
